A cryptex is a cylindrical puzzle consisting of a top and base secured by interlocking rings.
A small compartment inside can contain a small object, clue, or directions.
The Notes For Learning cryptex is 3D-printed using plastic components. While the cryptex is perfect for team activities, training, and escape rooms, it is not unbreakable. Please ask participants to avoid using force to open it.
HOW TO USE
- Align the digits of the unlock code with the small notch.
- Gently slide the top and base apart.
SUGGESTED APPLICATIONS
- Escape room/role playing – Use the cryptex as part of a series of puzzles. Participants find clues leading to the digits of the unlock code and then use another clue inside the cryptex to solve another puzzle. This masu cube fits perfectly in the cryptex.
- Icebreaker – Assign the four digits of the unlock code randomly to four participants. Ask participants to meet each other and find those with the unlock code digits. When everyone comes back together, get the numbers of the code and unlock it to reveal something.
- Classroom – Incorporate clues to the digits in worksheets or class homework. Whoever solves the unlock code first opens it to receive a prize or bonus points.
Recode the Cryptex
OPTION 1
- Cover each digit of the lock code with a thin strip of paper. Download a template.
- In each space, draw a symbol, write a number or letter.
- Attach each strip using transparent tape. Tip: Take care to align the correct number, letter, or symbol with the underlying digits of the unlock code.
OPTION 2
- Wrap a thin thread or waxed floss around the support tines that hold the rings in place. Tighten the thread gently to bring the tines slightly towards the center.
- Slip off each ring.
- Reorder the rings as desired and slide them back on. Tip: The ring at the bottom is the first number in the code.
- Use caution removing and replacing the rings.
