Elements of visual notes, part 1

Containers, arrows, and lines

Containers are boxes used to help organize visual notes or highlight information. You can create containers using a variety of simple shapes including squares and rectangles, circles and ovals, speech bubbles, banners, and basically any design creating a frame around content. Arrows and lines connect ideas and separate sections of a note.

Containers, arrows, and lines help structure the page, call attention to key content, and can be used interchangeably. They are extremely useful, and you can get creative with infinite variety. However, don’t overuse them, or they’ll lose the desired effect of making content stand out.

Icons and Symbols

Icons and symbols are essential for visual notes because they 1) can represent different ideas, 2) are faster to draw than words, and 3) add visual appeal to notes.

Symbols and icons are both visual elements used to represent ideas, objects, or concepts, but they have different characteristics and uses. Symbols are often more abstract and can represent a concept, idea, or object in a simplified or stylized form. They might not have a direct resemblance to what they represent. For example, a heart symbol can represent love.

Icons are typically more literal and pictorial. They often resemble the objects or actions they represent, making them easier to recognize and understand immediately. Icons are commonly used in apps and websites to represent actions (like a trash can icon for “delete”) or objects (like a camera icon for “photo”). They are designed to be universally understood, regardless of language or cultural background, by relying on widely recognized imagery.
