Accelerate instructional design with ChatGPT

In February I attended Training 2024, a conference that covered all aspects of training. This session on ChatGPT was one of my favorites. ChatGPT is useful for more than menu planning or writing a letter.

For instructional design ChatGPT has many potential uses …

  • Research
  • Brainstorming
  • Design acceleration
  • Content collaboration
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Role play chatbots
  • AI-assisted feedback
  • Content summarization

ChatGPT is a predictive text model. It looks across other content from the internet, uploaded information, and user input to generate responses.

When using ChatGPT you can ask ChatGPT about how it is looking for and returning answers to prompts.

  • Clarify an answer
  • Ask for the next step
  • Justify a response
  • Change a rule
  • Point out mistakes

During the training session we used Chat GPT to create a 2-minute video script using a sequence of prompts.

  1. What are popular story models for creating a video?
  2. Using an in-media-res (in the moment) story model, generate a 2-minute video script, “How to get fired with a compensation package.”
  3. Recommend songs the protagonist could sing at each step. This was an unnecessary but fun step.

The result was a script that I copied to Microsoft Word and edited.

The script that ChatGPT provided included scene directions and descriptions of characters. I used the description of the main character in Bing.com/create to create an image.
